Game Guide :: Minecraft in PS Vita

The minecraft releases on PS Vita is going to be the latest platform of this device, and since it’ll be the last platform release for a while, and also since it’s the first true portable console version of minecraft we figured that you might want to know how to survive through your first night in minecraft for the PS Vita.

So, you’ve hopped into minecraft, you’ve picked a world name and world seed (I recommend “uptoyou” by the way) and you’ve spawned into the world. Now what? Step one, getting a hang of all of the controls. The left analog stick allows you to move around, and when tapped forwards twice will start a sprint. This allows you to run faster, at the cost of hunger. The right stick allows you to look around, and when pressed in takes you into sneak mode.

The  minecraft X button is used to jump and move items around, and square allows you to craft. Finally the circle button drops items, the triangle button opens your inventory and the left and right bumpers will cycle through your inventory.

Now you know enough about the controls to do everything in minecraft! Your next step is to get some wood. Wood can be crafted into planks, which is necessary for the majority of recipes in minecraft, the most important of which is the crafting table. So, look around and eventually you should see some trees. Head straight to them.

After you’ve chopped down the trees and have a few pieces of wood, use the crafting menu to turn the wood into planks, and then the planks into a crafting table. Fortunately on the PS Vita and other consoles, crafting is automatic which means you just have to press on the crafting table to make one. Once you have a crafting table, leave the crafting interface and then place it down on the ground. This crafting table opens up the majority of crafting recipes, and is therefore fairly necessary, especially to make the tools you need to survive.

Once you have the crafting table, you should craft some sticks. These are used for the handles of tools and for torches, so 8 or 16 should be enough for now. Then, switch over using the bumpers to the “tools” tab of the crafting menu. Here you’ll want to create a wooden pickaxe for yourself. This pickaxe can be used to mine stone and coal, two ingredients you’ll need for survival.

Minecraft in PS Vita, With your pickaxe crafted you should have just 7 or 8 minutes until night falls, so make a quick judgment of your surroundings: do you see any exposed sources of stone nearby, perhaps in a mountain or just in a weirdly exposed part of a desert or forest? If yes, head straight to it and mine until you get few pieces of coal.

Otherwise, you’ll want to simply dig down in a stair case pattern until you find stone, and then mine at least 11 pieces of it. You might be lucky and find coal here, but you probably will not. Now, with the stone in hand, head back to the crafting bench and make yourself a furnace, then place it down. You should also make a stone axe, and use this to chop down a few more trees until you have a fair amount of wood. Even if you found coal in the mountain side, getting lots of wood will come in handy later for your house.

Anyway, if you do not have coal, place three wooden blocks in the top of the furnace, and two wooden planks (or four sticks) in the bottom. This will smelt your wood into charcoal, which serves a very similar purpose to coal. So now you have lots of wood, and coal or charcoal and a few minutes to go until it night comes and lots of monsters come out hunting for you, how do you prepare?

Again, another quick look at your surroundings can help here:

If you see a group of sheep nearby, killing three separate sheep will give you enough wool for a bed, and allow you to sleep through the night without a house, putting of the problem for another minecraft day and giving you plenty of time to build a house or shelter

If you see a cave nearby, you can head to it. Craft some torches (from the tools menu) and make sure the save is well lit. Now, barricade of the entrance using your wooden planks, and now you are safe for the night! To keep yourself occupied till morning, you can even mine in the back of the cave for iron and coal, or mine out the interior to make it feel more like home.

If neither of these are in sight, you can always build a house where you are right now. Just built yourself a door, and then build a house at least three blocks tall around it. Then, light up the interior and you’re safe for the night!

Whichever dwelling you chose to spend your first night in, now you have a safe place to come back to every night and avoid being killed! Remember to create a bed if wasting the night away isn’t your thing; and you can always expand this or replace this with something greater, as is the nature of minecraft!
